Portuguese sweet rice pudding, or Arroz Doce, as we refer to it in Portuguese, is a dessert that was very common in our household growing up. Grandma would often make a large tray of it for our weekly Sunday family dinners at her house, a memory that I have never forgotten.
Food has always been a large part of our family. It has truly been a way of bringing us all together, and forcing us to connect, in all the best ways. Some of my favourite memories involve my very large family (extended family included) — my parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc., all sitting around a very large table, and the room being filled with loud conversations and laughter. There was always such a joie de vivre in these moments, a true joy of living, and in those moments we were carefree. I know I am fortunate to have these wonderful memories, and have come to realize that many of them had one common denominator, and that was food.
So today, I share with you a recipe for Arroz Doce, a nostalgic food for me. And although this particular recipe is not grandma’s (that one she has kept secret!), it is still very yummy!
I have tried many different sweet rice puddings in my life (and have loved them all!), but what I came to realize is that they all tasted slightly different, really reflecting the individual who made that particular recipe. Some have been more cinnamony in taste, some are sweeter, others have been less sweet, some have a creamier consistency, while others cook their rice a bit less leaving a texture with a bit of a bite to it. Like I said, all very good in their own way.
To me, this recipe is a perfect balance of sweet, just the right amount of cinnamon that tops it, and a touch of lemon flavour from the lemon peel. Delish!
And although this can be served at room temperature, to me, nothing beats it when it’s warm. My suggestion to you, serve it when it’s warm, you will thank me later 🙂 So if you’re in the mood for a delicious dessert, not to mention, one that takes very little time to make, I encourage you to try this recipe out. I hope you enjoy it!!
